Just finished reading this book.
It was an easy read, but very good. I had watched the movie and then realized that it was based on a book.
I requested the book from my library and breezed through it. It was very moving.
David Gerrold is a Sci-Fi writer in his own right, and decided to adopt a child. The one that really connected with his soul was an abused, forgotten child with ADHD who was convinced he was a Martian.
Reading the book made me a little frustrated with the movie. They PC'd it up a little by making the lead character a widow, instead of letting him be gay, like he was in real life, but they did bring out the difficulty and the poignancy of raising a broken child.
This book was funny, introspective, and made me contemplate the joys and struggles of adoption. Plus it was an easy read so It flew by and I didn't have a chance to be bored by it.

In Message from a Bottle, they changed the main character from a female syndicated columnist to a small-time journalist and her boss from a woman to a man. They also played down the part of her son to a mere five minutes.
I am looking forward to reading this now. Thank you!
